Mammograms and pap smears are an integral part of helping women stay healthy. Mammograms and pap smears aid in diagnosing and treating breast cancer, cervical cancer and other problems in the earlier stages of development, when they are easier to treat and when treatment has a higher chance of success.
Mammograms for Breast Cancer
The American Cancer Society recommends that women receive mammograms annually beginning at age 40. Women should also receive clinical breast exams every three years during their 20s and 30s, and every year after age 40.
If you have a family history, a genetic tendency or another factor which increases your risk of breast cancer, we may recommend that you be screened with an MRI in addition to receiving a mammogram.
Pap Smears for Cervical Cancer
We recommend that women begin receiving pap smears to test for cervical cancer at age 21, and that women receive a pap test every three years between ages 21 and 29. Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should have a Pap test plus an HPV test every five years.
Women under the age of 21, or who have had a hysterectomy for a non-cancerous condition, should not be tested.
